Kingfisher
Kingfisher
Kingfishers are often divided into two main groups based on their feeding ecology; the taxonomy also often reflects this division. There are the ‘true kingfishers’ that do indeed fish, and these species tend to live near bodies of water such as streams, lakes and coastal areas. And then there are the ‘land kingfishers, which include many larger species, such as the kookaburras. And of course, there is much crossover between the two. All kingfishers are united by their diet of live prey, and this determines some of their physical features. They have thick bills and strong necks and heads. They have short squat bodies with short tails. To watch from prey they often sit atop an exposed perch just waiting for their next lunch; many species are known to have excellent eyesight. Many species are coloured on the variations of blue and water, with some species being amongst the prettiest of all birds.
